Silver Ferns great Jane Watson calls time on remarkable career
June 10, 2026
Netball New Zealand is paying tribute to Jane Watson, who has announced her retirement from professional netball following one of the most respected defensive careers the New Zealand game has produced.
Silver Fern #160, Watson steps away after 15 seasons at the highest level, a career that took in 66 tests for the Silver Ferns and a host of honours, including the crowning achievement of winning the 2019 Netball World Cup title.
Watson built her reputation on durability, athleticism and a fierce competitive edge at the back of the court, becoming one of the most admired defenders of her generation. Alongside her World Cup triumph, she claimed a Constellation Cup, dual ANZ Premiership titles and was twice named ANZ Premiership Player of the Year, an honour roll that places her among New Zealand netball's most decorated athletes.
After more than a decade in the ANZ Premiership, predominantly with the Tactix where she became a stalwart and leader, Watson moved across the Tasman ahead of the 2026 season to join the Giants in Australia's Super Netball competition. Her career is defined by consistency, leadership and excellence.
"This game has given me more than I ever could have imagined,” she said.
“I've been lucky enough to experience unforgettable moments, build great friendships and have the honour of representing New Zealand doing something I love."
Watson's contribution to the black dress, to the Tactix, and to New Zealand netball more broadly has been phenomenal. She represented her country with distinction across more than a decade of international netball, and inspired a generation of young defenders coming through the game.
Netball New Zealand thanks Jane for her extraordinary service to the sport, and wishes her, and her whānau, all the very best for the future.
