All participants begin with four core leadership workshops. These workshops focus on personal qualities of a leader; how to lead others; challenges of leadership; and preparation for giving back to the community. The workshops will be activity based and include personal material which the participants can take away. There will be reasonable time between each workshop to allow participants to learn, reflect and apply.
Once participants complete the core leadership workshops (bronze award), they will then elect a pathway focusing on either coaching, umpiring or ‘giving back’. Participants will have the opportunity to attain any Netball New Zealand coaching or umpiring qualifications, in conjunction with the leadership programme. The three pathways will provide opportunities for participants to give back to their netball centre and community through coaching or umpiring for a school/club team; creating netball opportunities/events; or volunteering at their local netball centre.
Through this, participants will be able to gain silver and gold awards, depending on their level of contribution in their respective pathway(s).
The programme is targeting young people aged between 12 and 24 years living in the Counties Manukau and Waitakere areas. By virtue of the geographic area, the programme is focused on Maori and Pacific people but it is not exclusive.
The programme is aimed at working with young people who are starting to exhibit leadership qualities, and also young people who could benefit from growing their confidence and leadership skills.
In 2016, Netball Northern Zone identified the need to grow the capability and capacity within the netball system in the Counties Manukau region. A concept emerged to work with young people in the community to develop leadership capabilities and grow the capacity in the netball system.
Dedicated funding from the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Aktive Targeted Population Groups, Youthtown, Mangere Otahuhu, Papakura, and Otara Papatoetoe Local Boards has enabled the concept to be fully developed into a leadership programme.

Growing young leaders through netball
This pilot programme utilises netball as a vehicle to enhance the health and wellbeing and provide opportunities for youth to explore concepts of leadership and develop their capability and confidence as young leaders within their community.
Young people between 12 and 24 years. Aimed at young people who are starting to exhibit leadership qualities and those young people who could benefit from growing their confidence and leadership skills.
The programme is delivered in three stages:
Many of our learners have the mind set of just playing and not realising that understanding leadership, identity, values, team work, transferrable and interpersonal skills can help you grow as a person and as a netballer. The content and themes that are present within the workshops are relatable and accessible and have helped our learners gain an inner confidence within themselves to be part of a team.
Our netball centre found the Netball Leaders programme has developed the confidence of the young people and provided a framework to support their growth as volunteers. The centre values the stronger connections with youth to positively build the centre for the future.

How long have you been umpiring, and how did you get in to umpiring?
I started my umpiring back in 2014 with my first tournament being Maori Nationals held in Tauranga where I achieved my Centre Badge. I first got in to umpiring where a friend of mine who was playing at the time, invited me to come and watch and I was then asked if I could umpire and I was nervous as first time umpires do become.
