Coaching is rewarding, is a great way to contribute to your community, and connects you with others. Community coaches are essential to the enjoyment and delivery of netball at your local centre.

Getting Started

There are several resources available to support you on your coaching journey, as well as the Netball NZ Coaching Framework below, which provides an overview of the five recognised areas of coaching of netball.

Foundation or junior coaching

For our junior players, our netball centres follow the Netball NZ futureFERNS programme which works to best develop the foundational skills of our young players.

The futureFERNS website explains the structure of the game within the programme and provides coaches with a ‘coaching portal’ which gives week-by-week guidance and activities for trainings.

You can also access Sport Tutor, where Netball NZ provides you with a personal dashboard, online workshops and resources to use for coaching.

Under 23’S Assistant Coach Appointed

The Northern Zone is delighted to announce the appointment of Paula Smith as Assistant Coach of the Under 23 Squad.

Netball Northern Zone High Performance Manager, Hamish Barton, believes the appointment of Paula in the Assistant Coaching role and Kiri Wills as Head Coach creates a high quality coaching team for the U23’s. Over the last 5 years Paula has been involved in head coach and assistant coaching positions for a number of Performance teams with Auckland/Waitakere and also been part of the successful Mount Albert Grammar School team.

Smith has also been involved in the Greater Auckland Coaching Unit’s, Coach Advance Programme which has been an invaluable experience and enabled Paula to grow her knowledge and understanding of coaching by rubbing shoulders with Performance coaches from other codes and also international renowned leaders in coaching such as Ralph Pim from America and Australian, Wayne Goldsmith.

Paula will be working alongside Head Coach Kiri Wills leading the U23 programme which will run from early November 2013 through to the end of February 2014, which will include on-going fitness testing, mental skills training, nutrition and a specific skill development programme.

Netball Northern Zone Under 23 Coach Appointment - Kiri Wills

The Northern Zone are delighted to announce the appointment of Kiri Wills as Head Coach of the Under 23 Squad.

Netball Northern Zone High Performance Manager, Hamish Barton, is "very pleased to have Kiri on board as the Under 23 Head Coach. We had four very strong contenders for the role, but in the end Kiri shone through as the right person for the coaching position. Kiri is an extremely talented coach and we are lucky to have someone of her experience and knowledge now working with our Under 23 athlete's".

Wills will be in charge of the U23 programme which will run from early November 2013 through to the end of February 2014, which will include on-going fitness testing, mental skills training, nutrition and a specific skill development programme.

Open trials for the squad are scheduled to take place at the end of February, then the named squad will begin training as a team and compete against other Zones around the country, all will culminate in the New Zealand National Age Group Championships, being held in Dunedin 7th-10th July 2014.
